# 5 Many letters are not pronounced in French, but not all of them are useless. For instance, in old French the “s” letter in “teste” would exist due to its latin origin “testa”. This letter was done away with, and the circumflex accent was introduced to replace it. Hence, the word “testa” is currently “tête”, just like “hospital” is “hôpital", “forest” is “forêt” and “mesmes”, “meme”.
